The Department of Justice has been assigned with the
responsibility for the overall administration and coordination of
the ATIPPA, which will involve the provision of support and
leadership in the interpretation and application
of the legislation.
In order to help facilitate this mandate, the Department has
established an Access to Information and Protection of Privacy
(ATIPP)
Office. While each public body is required
to designate an access coordinator to process and respond to
individual access requests, the ATIPP Office is responsible for
ensuring that the ATIPPA
is properly implemented and that it
is administered on a consistent and efficient basis.
This new legislative regime has been designed to
create a culture of openness and accountability in the public
sector. Government and the ATIPP Office are committed to promoting
this new culture and making this initiative a success.
The ATIPP Office is located in the Department of Justice. Its
key functions include:
- providing
education and training to public bodies
- developing
policy and procedures
- developing and
maintaining a Policy and Procedures Manual
- providing
leadership and advice in interpretation and administration of
the ATIPPA
- liaising
with Access
and Privacy Coordinators in each public body
- fostering common
standards
- ensuring that
appropriate processes are implemented and maintained in each
public body
- monitoring public bodies’
administration of ATIPP by collecting and maintaining
statistics on the number of requests received, the observance
of time limits, fees collected, application of exceptions to
access, etc.
