Module 4: Access

Most of this course deals with privacy and the protection of personal information. However, as the title of The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act suggests, protection of privacy is only one of the main components of the Act.

This module looks more closely at the other major component: the public's right to access government records.

Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the right of access provided in the legislation
  • Describe the process of responding to an access request
  • Define the role of the Information and Privacy Commissioner in regard to access requests
  • Explain why an ATIPP access request is not always needed
  • Describe the protection of personal information when giving access to records
