Personal Information

Here, you learn that special attention must be given to personal information when providing access to records.

Personal information must be considered carefully when providing access to records informally or through a ATIPP access request.

Personal information is different from other information in government records.

  • Individuals have a right to access their own personal information but do not have broad rights to access another person's personal information.
  • Personal information can only be disclosed where The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act allows.
  • Personal information will generally be removed (i.e. severed) from a record before access is given (unless it is the applicant's personal information).
Key Point

Check Before Disclosing

You must always check for personal information before disclosing records. In most cases, that information must be removed from the record before disclosing. Check with your ATIPP Coordinator or Privacy Analyst for more information.
