The Public Interest Disclosure and Whistleblower Protection Act came into effect on July 1, 2014. This legislation allows public employees to disclose serious and significant wrongdoings without fear or threat of reprisal.
Newfoundland and Labrador is the seventh province, along with the Government of Canada, to introduce such legislation. The legislation applies to employees within government departments, including Executive Council, as well as those employed with government boards, corporations, authorities, and agencies.
Under this legislation, the Office of the Citizens' Representative is responsible for receiving and investigating disclosures of wrongdoing. The Citizens' Representative also has these responsibilities for the Speaker, the Clerk, and Members and employees of the House of Assembly.
